City of Milwaukee Winter Parking Regulations Start Tuesday, December 1st
City of Milwaukee winter parking regulations are in effect from December 1, 2009 through March 1, 2010. Most residential streets have alternate side night parking during this period. However there are exceptions to this rule. Overnight parking is prohibited on major arterial streets and bus routes during this time period. These streets are not posted. In addition some streets on the east side and near south side that allow overnight parking on both sides of the street will only allow alternate side night parking during the December to March time period. These streets are also not posted. IN:SITE Park East Corridor Project
Fostering temporary public art in Milwaukee County since the spring of 2006, a Milwaukee based arts group named IN:SITE is working with the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County and private property owners to transform the Park East Corridor. The temporary art project will culminate in 11 installations on sixteen blocks of the corridor. The City of Milwaukee Arts Board initiated this project by voting unanimously to provide over $11,000 for artist stipends. The project invites pedestrians, bikers, people who ride the bus, and drivers to explore the Park East Corridor. Thirteen local artists have come forward with bold, diverse projects. All the art will be in place by August 23, when there will be a week of activities August 23-30.

Play the video at left to view the August 24th press conference about IN:SITE.

Sponsors and hosts for the art include, but are not limited to, the following: the City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Ruvin Development Inc., Mandel Group, Laacke & Joys, Big Bend Development, The Flatiron, M&I Bank, Time Warner Cable, The Moderne LLC, RSC Developers, Grace Lutheran Church, Riverfront Plaza and Village Church.

MPD Changes Affect All 3rd District Neighborhoods
The Milwaukee Police Department has made re-districting changes that affect the 3rd Aldermanic District. The changes, implemented in July, were announced by Police Chief Edward Flynn in June as a means of reducing the levels of crime, fear, and disorder through community-based, problem-oriented, and data-driven policing. To view the MPD’s re-drawn district borders, please click here.

Alderman Kovac said the re-districting affects the 3rd District in the following ways: Police District One will now serve areas east of the Milwaukee River and District Five will serve areas west of the Milwaukee River. The community liaison officers for each district will remain the same – Officer Mark Buetow for District One and Officer Ray Robakowski for District Five. The commanders for each district have changed – Capt. Patrick Mitchell is in command of District One and Capt. Edith Hudson is in command at District Five. (The chief has sole authority to implement the re-districting.)

Downer Ave.Downer Ave. DPD & Streetscape Project Proposal
Van Buren Management is proposing a change to their Detailed Planned Development for N. Downer Ave. (between E. Park Pl. and E. Bradford Ave.). The original DPD, approved in 2008, called for the construction of a four story, 60-foot tall plastic surgery center on the SE corner of N. Downer Ave. and E. Park Pl.

The new proposal is a five story, 60-foot tall, 45-room boutique hotel with a restaurant and banquet center. The developer has also updated the plans for the Downer Ave. streetscape, and is seeking matching grant money from the city to complete the project. Both the zoning change for the hotel and the public financing for the streetscape will require Common Council approval. Before the formal public review process begins, my office wants to know what you and your neighbors think of the changes.

Milwaukee River Greenway Corridor Interim Study Overlay Zone

In May of 2007, the City of Milwaukee created the Milwaukee River Greenway Corridor Interim Study Overlay Zone in order to permanently protect and preserve the natural areas along the river corridor between the former North Avenue Dam and the city limits at Silver Spring Drive and to improve public access to this natural resource. The official Milwaukee River Greenway Corridor Overlay District will be established this year, based on the interim study findings and extensive public input.

Please visit Milwaukee River Work Group's website to learn more about the group and its goals at www.protectmilwaukeeriver.org and visit www.mkedcd.org/planning/zoning/is/milwaukeeriver/index.html to see current draft overlay district guidelines. You can read about the legislative history of the Interim Study and Overlay District at http://milwaukee.legistar.com/Legislation (enter file numbers 070124 and 070127 in the search bar and make sure the Date is set to ALL).
